This recording features diverse music from Argentina, Mexico, Cuba and Brazil. The musical journey begins with two pieces by the Argentine guitarist-composer, MAXIMO DIEGO PUJOL. "Heavy Wood" is a play on words. Pujol definitely is a fan of rock'n roll (a la Led Zeppelin or even early Metallica, for instance) and his composition "Heavy Wood" is what he describes as a "rock prelude". This short tribute to rock music really does rock from start to finish with an insistent bass line throughout, subtle variations on the catchy 3-note riff stated at the beginning of the piece and with each variation comes greater intensity in the delivery. The "Candombe en Rondo" is totally different atmosphere but also bristling with great rhythmic energy in its outer sections with a slightly mellower, slower yet still rhythmic middle section, The candombe is a ritual song and dance ceremony of Santeria origin that is also vital in the Santeria circles found in Uruguay, in the state of Bahia in Brazil and Cuba. Originally for flute and guitar, the SEIS MELODIAS POPULARES BRASILEIRAS by guitarist composer Celso Machado, also works extremely well for the clarinet (instead of the flute). Different types of melody-dance genres are covered in these six very charming pieces, everything from choro to samba and bossa nova. The cello appears here with exquisite piano accompaniment in a most gorgeous piece titled "Ave Maria (Tanti Anni Prima) by the late New Tango creator-pioneer and it's best composer and bandoneon virtuoso, ASTOR PIAZZOLLA. The solo piano music of the great Mexican composer, MARIO RUIZ ARMENGOL, is truly a beautiful musical treasure to be discovered by new music fans. Here we have a gorgeous and impressionistic "Preludio Para Piano o Arpa" by Armengol. The Brazilian composer-pianist-conductor, RADAMES GNATTALLI, wrote a substantial amount of music, ranging from music for solo piano to large symphonic works and piano concertos. One of his most cogent and beautiful works is his SONATA FOR CELLO AND GUITAR in 3 movements. It is always a great joy to play this work. In its 3 movements one can find great variety of moods, colors and many moments of great exuberance. Finally we have a world premiere recording of an amazing solo piano work by the late Cuban composer, my dear friend and mentor, Maestro RENE TOUZET. This is the first recording ever of this solo piano work titled "GAVIOTA" (Seagull). It is a passionate work with great lyricism and descriptive passages depicting the very fast ups and downs of the seagull's flight.
