"Three Part Bass Invention in G" is a one-off single I wrote during December 2011. My instrument of choice has always been the Bass Guitar, specifically, the 4-string electric bass. Ever since I began attentively watching musicians perform live, I was always drawn to the bassists. Even before I really knew the differences between guitars and basses my focus was on the bass players. I perceived then and now a sort of outsider/underdog vibe from the bass. The sound was low and ominous, usually buried in the mix. To hear the bass often required me to focus and "lean in" just to get through everything else, a more intimate listening experience than getting forcefully blasted by guitars, drums, or vocals. The players themselves were often strange in look and personality, the wierd guy pushed to the side. My life in general equated to my perceptions of the bass, at least in rock and heavy metal music. I was most oftenly on the outside of social circles, didn't get the trends, maintained a soft voice, and felt a strong feeling of adverse pressure from it all. I feel it only natural that I would gravitate towards the bass. But as I began listening to rock/metal music my perceptions and feelings of life and music were blown into new realms. Players like Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Geddy Lee, and Roger Waters inspired me with their respective skills and ambitions. In these initial influences, I saw players actualizing their musical goals while being upfront in the mix, playing solos, founding bands, writing songs, and doing it all on the Bass Guitar. I've always had a desire to do everything I can with the Bass Guitar and to defy expectations, carving my own path and creating a truely individual voice for myself.
