简介
Sidestepping the vocal pretensions and acrobatics of many current artists, Léanie's honest, lullaby voice has been compared to singer-songwriters of the late 60s/early 70s, like Christine McVie and Carole King, but also with Dido, Lily Allen, The Sundays and, as one young person suggested, 'Lana Del Rey but English and happier'. Daughter of Top Topham, original & current guitarist with The Yardbirds, Léanie followed in his musical footsteps but on a different path from his Blues roots, her own record collection embracing Joan Armatrading, Kate Bush, Elton John, David Bowie and Bob Dylan, to Ride, Cocteau Twins, Foo Fighters, Tori Amos, Scott Matthews and PJ Harvey. Léanie’s songs are often mellow and wistful, but quirky and slightly warped at times. Laid-back, infectious melodies thinly veil tongue-in-cheek observations of peeping toms, bimbos and breast implants, and her lighthearted folky ditties and darker piano refrains sit happily side by side. She has gigged over London, the South East and Europe over the past decade and released her début album Karamelién in 2006, which received great reviews in the national music press (including Music Week) and airplay on regional, national and international radio stations. Her new album, Quicksands & Shadows, the title track already lauded by BBC Radio South, continues to explore the light and dark of life, maintaining her overriding sense of wistfulness and existential questioning, but with witty little palate cleansers that show her love of Doc Martens and frustration with recurring dreams. What they say: ‘Reminiscent of the Marine Girls and early Everything But The Girl with echoes of the more ethereal parts of the British folk movement in the early seventies, Léanie has that curiously English charm that makes you want to buy her flowers. The sweet and charming presentation, however, is merely a veneer for some dark and dryly amusing lyrics on the subjects of life and love’ - Bluesbunny Music Reviews “Quintessentially English and beautifully-constructed, these tracks invoke the very best of our homegrown singer-songwriters. Think Beverley Craven, Lily Allen and Dido, and you're on the right road, but Léanie is never anything but fresh and original. Listen, then listen again, and you’ll be captured’ - R J Ellory, musician & author
