The Accused began fusing hardcore punk's hyper-nihilism with the teeth and claws of heavy metal as far back as 1983-- long before the term "crossover" music was coined. In an attempt to separate themselves from the influx of copy-cat thrashers arriving on the scene, The Accused labeled their music "Splatter Rock--an homage to a 1983 book titled "Splatter Movies: Breaking the Last Taboo of the Silver Screen". Further inspiration came in the form of Iron Maiden's mascot, Eddie--to which The Accused answered with an ever more BAD-A** mascot!... a female zombie vigialante named "Martha Splatterhead" who's ghoulish image was created by lead guitarist and founder of The Accused, Tommy Niemeyer. Throughout the years, the band has invited many amazing artists--some of the underground's finest pens--to create their version of Martha Splatterhead. Some of those works can be seen on vintage concert flyers, album covers, and various merchandise released over the years. By touring relentlessly through the 80's and 90's The Accused increased their fanbase by delivering their powerful live performances to every fan's doorstep city by city. The Accused offered something to audiences they had never seen or heard before. Raw energy backed by an intensity seldom-seen at the time.
