简介
"Freakers on the Spazmonaut Train", by Darling New Neighbors [DNN], was recorded and mixed in Fall 2010 by Jeff Hoskins and mastered by Grammy-nominated producer, Erik Wofford (Cacophony Recorders). In Darling New Neighbors' usual fashion, songs range from the catchy accordion pop of "Mr. Ahmadinejad" to the teeth-scraping angst of "Hate", with some luxuriant harmonies and coasting riffs in between. Elizabeth Jackson polishes off the EP with a signature paean to small-town freaks in "Hometown 1988." Amber Nepodal (trumpet) steps up with a Chuck Mangione moment on "Femme Fatale". Lee Clippard (Austin Samba School) and Rashid Amrani handsomely fill out the brass section. Founded by Elizabeth Jackson and Amy Moreland in 2004, DNN began as an all-girl, lo-fi outfit which a local grocery clerk compared to the Shaggs. After a growing phase with drummer Reid Faist, their sound tightened up with Karl Lundin on drums and a brass section anchored by Amber Nepodal (One Hundred Flowers). DNN's bio includes national tours, two full-length albums and two EPs, and critical praise from sources like Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney), Kelly Hogan (Neko Case), Amplifier Magazine, and Ghettoblaster. In addition to their free-wheeling stage shows that mix accordion pop with growling rock, Darling New Neighbors became known for their level of spectacle, with themed costumes, guest dancers, and priceless covers ("My Humps", by Black-Eyed Peas). Their musical chops and lyrical depth proved a steady foil. "Freakers..." is an apt coda to the colorful life-span of Darling New Neighbors, signaling both greater creative risk and realization.
