简介
On June 15th I traveled to Waterfront Studios in Hudson, New York to record a classical guitar album. This analogue studio, built inside a nineteenth-century Gothic Revival church, is the unique vision of producer Henry Hirsch. The sanctuary serves as the main recording room. Frescoes adorn 35’ walls, and the antique stained glass windows catch sunlight, refracting purple and yellow bands throughout the space. Analogue recording studios are rare in our digital age, and the collaboration of a vaulted hall, vintage equipment, and classical guitar music created the distinctive aesthetic of this recording. The performances were recorded in complete takes, and the music you hear is minimally edited. To preserve the full spectrum of sound, the album was not compressed (a digital technique used on most commercial recordings that decreases dynamic variability). The decision not to use compression allows listeners to appreciate the acoustics of the church. You must turn up the volume to experience the nuanced language of the guitar, the polyphony of notes vibrating within the hall. Andres Segovia referred to the guitar as a small orchestra: six strings able to produce the variations of orchestral tones and timbres. The church has unique spirituality, and in the evening I found the space to be engulfed in a kind of reverie that inspired my performances. The cavernous room was lit by a single globe... just enough illumination for me to see the fretboard. And as I played, the room seemed to pulse in rhythm with the music, the sounds of the guitar shimmering, like poured mercury, hypnotic and glowing in the moonlight.
