"Kalaupapa" is a peninsula on the Island of Molokai in the Hawaiian Islands. Beginning in 1866, Hawaiians with leprosy were rounded up and exiled to this remote peninsula, where they suffered not only from a dreaded disease, but also from deplorable conditions. The arrival of Father Damien, in 1873, helped bring the world's attention to the plight of the patients of Kalaupapa, and conditions slowly improved. Still, it wasn't until 1969 that the patients of Kalaupapa were "pardoned" for the "crime" of contracting this dreaded disease.

Today, there are only a handful of Hansen's Disease patients remaining in Kalaupapa. We have had the good fortune to befriend the residents of Kalaupapa to share music and aloha. This composition is dedicated to the beautiful spirit of our friends in Kalaupapa.
