简介
"I was alone, in a new place, a new culture. So I looked to music as a comfort. Other people turned to sports or drugs, but I turned to music to deal with my pain." As recalled to Afropop Worldwide, Aar Maanta remembers the situation he faced on arrival in the UK in the 1980s as a refugee from battle-scarred Somalia. While his compatriot Mo Farah reached for the running shoes, Aar gave his own life new definition by heading for the recording studio. The results represent his specific duality. While drawing on traditional Somali styles, this singer also adds super-smooth touches like pop and R&B. His songs' subject matter also cut both ways, describing the hardship of his early years back home in East Africa as well as his relatively carefree times since. Not for nothing is he regarded as the spokesman for a generation of young UK-based Somalis. (Biography written by Nige Tassell 2014) Womad
