I think more than anything else I wanted this record to be authentic. I wanted it to be an honest representation of what I do musically, and where I am spiritually and emotionally. A lot of it is semi-autobiographical, in that I've included a lot of characters that I resonate with as well as many that are inspired by people I've met over the past few years. There's a strong nautical theme that kept working it's way into the lyrics, but I didn't want it to be some gimmicky Buffetesque list of odes to saltwater and shrimp cocktails. I tempered it with a lot of other experiences I've had along the way. It's shrouded a bit when it gets really intimate, but feel free to place your own meaning to those words. It's dark, forceful and pressing but shining with hope. Most music today doesn't happen honestly. All genres of music have been polished and bleached and pasteurized and shrinkwrapped and compressed until there's very little art and execution left in them at all. In trying to achieve that previously mentioned "authenticity" I've decided to take a new approach to this record. I'm performing the songs live - guitar and vocals simultaneously. You'll hear very little overdubbing, maybe two or three songs have a second guitar and those are just solo sections and counterpoint melody. I spent the last 3 1/2 years playing and touring alone, and I really want to capture that before I move on to larger scale productions. Everything that you hear on this record I can do again right in front of you. I also am not going to use any pitch correction software to cover up any mistakes. No punch ins, no smoke and mirrors. If there's a clam, and I feel like the performance is the best I can offer, then the clam stays and becomes part of the charm. This is what happens when you play live music, and it's magical.
