简介
The band has further refined its unique aesthetic of combining traditional music instrumentation and themes while continuing to explore their own unique take on modern acoustic-electric music. To quote the last song on the disc “The Suffering Song”, at times this music sounds like it’s “as old as the world”. Melody Maker has said the band writes “songs that light up the furthest reaches of the soul”. At the same time, this is music that doesn’t easily fit into categories. Each band member contributes widely varied influences and yet it ultimately blends into a unique vision directed by principle songwriter and vocalist Robert Fisher. Recorded in Ljubljana, Boston and London over a period of a year and a half, this recording began life as an accident. Much like the bands first record 3Am Sunday at Fortune Otto’s, this recording is the result of a few off days in the studio with nothing on the agenda much more than having some fun. The band had arrived in Ljubljana for a festival and found itself with a few days off between shows. Contacting their friend Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts), they discovered there was time available in a local studio. Chris joined in on the sessions and within the first few hours it became obvious to everyone that this was a special event. Over the next few days the band tracked six of the songs that they would eventually choose from for the CD. Extra tracking occurred in Ljubljana in November during a break in touring before the recording was taken home to Boston to allow other non-touring members to put their parts on tape and then back to London for the finishing touches. This is the first recording featuring long time members Simon Alpin (guitars of all variety), Yuko Murata (keyboards of all sorts), Josh Hillman (violin), Nathan Logus (drums) and Dennis Cronin (trumpet). Also making appearances are stalwart members David Michael Curry (viola, saw, vocals), Pete Sutton (bass), Peter Linnane (field organ) and Robert Fisher (acoustic guitar and vocals). Besides Chris Eckman there are a few additional special guests including Kristen Hersh and Jess Klein. Kristen Hersh is featured on the exquisite ghost story “The Ghost of the Girl in the Well’. This is not a complete list of players; in the band’s words, if someone tells you they played on the record…they probably did. Willard Grant Conspiracy was born by accident out of weekly living room get-togethers in Boston, Ma. Its live arrangement has always been based on who is available to play when there is playing to be done. At this point the band can call on near 30 members living in three countries.
