kist o dreams is a treasure chest of gems from Scotland's song heritage, spanning centuries of tradition. Most of the songs are from oral tradition and these are the versions Christina sings in her own family. Reflecting the intimacy of singing one-to-one with a child, Christina's naturally soothing and emotive voice is unaccompanied through most of the songs with spellbinding clarity. Occasionally she is joined by Bill Taylor's sensitive arrangements on a range of small harps, comprising early medieval (Pictish) harp, renaissance bray harp, psaltery and wire-strung clarsach, and by Christine McClenaghan's sympathetic, warm vocals. Born out of a conviction that these beautiful songs can not only charm a child to sleep but can help form close bonds between singer and child, the initial run of CDs was distributed free across the Scottish Highlands to families with newborn children. When the funding for distribution ran out, though, demand for kist o dreams did not and the album was re-pressed to meet continuing orders.
