“Dark Lover borrows a theme about a seductive lover recounted in such old folk ballads as “House Carpenter” and “The Daemon Lover” but flavors the theme with music that recalls both an Eastern European Gypsy “orkestar” and music from the Louisiana swamps. Jen Elliott sings lead on “Dark Lover” with additional vocal contributions from David Steele. The tune employs a wide range of instruments including Dobro, banjo, mandolin, guitar, accordion, violin, bass trombone, electric bass, wood drum, bass drum, “scratchskins,” claves, cowbell, cymbals, hi-hats and hand claps.
