简介
"Beautiful tunes, devoid of transitory tredndiness." F. Katheleen Foley, LOS ANGELES TIMES. "He's a poet in a Dylan-nesque vein. His singing voice reminds me of a tired, more world weary Bruce Sprinsteen (thankfully shorn of that singer's earnestness and histrionics). Frisell's accompaniment is simple and effective, shorn of flash (which isn't really Frisell's hallmark anyway). This not really they type of music reviewed by Cadence but in the singer/songwriter vein, I'd much rather hear Rubinstein than any of the other, more popular artists. Robert Iannapollo, Cadance Magazine, February 2003. "With only the quiet power of Bill Frisell's guitar providing a backdrop for the most part, Donald Rubinstein has created an awesome display of the hold that music can have. "Rubinstein's lyrics are decidedly poetic, yet these are songs in a more traditional sense than a poetry reading might imply, although the approach is similar to a poet shining his lonely spotlight back on his audience for them to peer inside of themselves. I've had this playing over and over for many months and it changes with me, like the best expressions do. 'Time Again' is able to be majestic and deeply personal, displaying a solitary reflection that embraces humanity. The music has a free, improvisational feel throughout that is more blues than anything else, which I believe establishes a foundation for all the varied emotions it speaks so beautifully. Frisell's guitar is the perfect companion throughout, in fact your never quite sure if it's the guitar or the vocalist who's guiding you here; the match is that solid. A TREASURE." (Bryant Baker, Gajoob) "12 Beatnik-folk songs produced by jazzy avant-gardists, Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz...quietly compelling, playing like the after hours musing of a (much) hipper John Hiatt." (Review by Keven McAlester, The New Times, Los Angeles) "Donald is crazy. Like Charlie Parker was crazy. Like Kerouac and Bob Dylan are crazy. Perfect crazy. Full of suprises. I can't say anything better about anybody. Crazy on this idiot planet is as good as it gets. Donald is even better. A monster artist (not bad for a yankee)." Terry Allen "Time Again is only Rubinstein's voice, acoustic piano and Bill Frisell's guitar. The music from this album had a spoken word/slow jazz/bluesy feel that I really liked. Rubinstein's voice sounds a little like Henry Rollins; musically, though, Rubinstein doesn't have the metal/grunge influences. The lyrics to the songs really catch your attention and he does a good job of bringing them out in the music. This is one of those albums that see regular duty in my CD player. Not a common fate among the CD's that indie musicians send me." (Jacob Johnston)
