简介

The title 'Going to the Well' is derived from a Thomas Mann quote about the inspiration of our past being like a bottomless well that we can draw from. All of the songs here take their hint from this insight. 'Wounded Knee '73' is about an incident of recent American Indian history and the song is written in an early 70's classic rock style. 'I Depend on You' is done in a tango mode with an extended piano solo. 'No Mercy' features the stellar vocals of Marc Lowe in a surprisingly upbeat song. 'Where You Are' is based on ancient text that celebrates love, sex and marriage. It is performed as a song of celebration, especially evident in the final exhilarating minutes. 'I've Come Away' features guitars and vocals only, a plaintive but memorable tune. Depicting a scene from an ancient epic tale, 'You're Going to Be Mine' is the "single" of the album with Lisa Silverman lending her emotional vocals as the goddess of Love Inanna trying to seduce Gilgamesh with violinist Mana Kudou, in splendid form, accompanying her. Lisa also sings as herself in a very affecting unplugged version at the end. Marc Lowe appears again in 'Seven Nights', another song based on the epic of Gilgamesh, and here the expressive range of his voice is in clear evidence. 'God's Plan' is a quick tongue-in-cheek look at rationalizing suffering. 'When the Music Comes to You' features the gorgeous voice of Maya Hayashi, a famed opera singer from Japan. In the middle of the song she holds a high note for 20 seconds at full voice! It's a lovely song based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. 'Simonetta Dancing' is an instrumental Renaissance-style dance piece based on the life of Florence's most beautiful woman, and the subject of several Botticelli paintings, Simonetta Vespucci, who died in her early 20s. 'One Cup and You're Gone' is a quiet but poignant scene again from the epic of Gilgamesh featuring a psaltery, flute and guitar. 'Someday You'll Be Free' is the anthem-like coda of the recording with a very memorable ending. 'Going to the Well' has a great mix of styles and performers and will reward the adventurous listener ready for a sincere and moving experience.
