简介

Costis Drygianakis专辑介绍:by François CoutureDuring the 1980s and 1990s, Greek composer Costis Drygianakis worked within a group called Optical Music. Therefore Post-Optical Landscapes was a way for him to move to something else. This album contains two pieces of a little over 30 minutes each -- two suites. "Sound collage" is not an expression that can do justice to Drygianakis' work, but there is no better term to describe his technique. The composer used preexisting recordings (some dating as far back as 1976), made some more specifically for this project, and combined them, treated them, and composed them into a striking assemblage. Through the process, he blurred distinctions between recycling, composing, and collaging. Recorded improvisations are recomposed, composed bits of music are recontextualized. Dozens of contributors appear throughout the work, playing violin, flute, percussion, synthesizers, toys, and mostly singing and talking. Snippets of Greek texts can be heard, traditional Greek and Arabic singing, laughs, shouts, etc. Post-Optical Landscapes is part musique concrète, part sound collage, and part audio art, but belongs to none of these categories, being as unclassifiable as some of the works coming out of the Québecois collective Avatar (especially Jocelyn Robert's early CDs) or some German hörspiel. Even though no narration is involved, the piece seems to unfold following a dramatic purpose. The listener, trying to organize what is heard in order to find "meaning," is taken on an impressive audio ride: Tension builds up, crisis happens, temporary peace settles in, etc. It gets confusing at times and, honestly, it would take many attentive listens to start to understand the composer's numerous artistic choices. Fascinating and very strongly recommended. Released in a limited run of 850 copies.
