Since 4, he began studying piano with pianist Shigu Zhang and later with the distinguished Chinese piano pedagogues Huiqiao Bao and Mingsun Zhou. In 2009 he was admitted, as a classical piano student, to the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music under Prof. Zhiwei Zhang’s class. In the same year, A Bu began taking jazz piano lessons with the Chinese jazz pianist Hongwei Kong (aka Golden Buddha). After winning both First and Audience Prizes at the 2015 Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition, A Bu frequently toured in Europe and China. One of China’s most promising jazz artists, A Bu was invited by UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz to perform on International Jazz Day’s Global All-Star Concert, where he shared the stage and collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Till Brönner and other international jazz stars. In 2019, A Bu was the First Prize winner of the Riga Jazz Stage contest and the recipient of the Ruhr Piano Festival Scholarship Award. He has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras, among them the Moscow Jazz Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and Ningbo Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his career as a jazz pianist, A Bu is developing as a composer. His works have been featured by the United Nations Chamber Music Society. A Bu’s upcoming commissioned works include a suite for two pianos, a trio for French horn, violin and piano (commissioned by 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medalist Yun Zeng), numerous solo piano pieces and works for chamber ensemble. His Piano Sonata No. 1 “Pinus” and Fantasie “Sleeping in A Dream” Op. 7 are due for publication by Schott Music in late 2022. A Bu graduated from the Juilliard School in May 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in classical piano, studying under pianist Hung-Kuan Chen. Starting in September 2022, he will begin pursuing his master’s degree with a double major in piano and composition at the Mannes School of Music of The New School in New York City.
