The Swiss

The Swiss

简介:The Swiss is Luke Million and Tony Mitolo Influences: Herbie Hancock, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, ELP, Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Daft Punk & Frank Zappa   There was an article written last month for The New Yorker by one of my favourite music critics Sasha Frere-Jones. In it, SFJ outlines why 2009 is the year that hip-hop died, and is being usurped by an old and often maligned genre: disco!   Call him crazy, but there is undoubtedly a disco revolution occurring. (In fact, a couple of triple j folk threw a disco club night in Sydney a few weeks ago.) Tony Mitolo might avoid the word like Hogwarts students avoid saying "Voldemort", but "the D-word" is an inescapable descriptor when it comes to his band, dance trio The Swiss.   They've been kicking around for a number of years, but now seems the right time for The Swiss to unleash their brand of party music on the world. They're no strangers to the music scene, though. Mitolo was once part of Pnau, while The Swiss act as the backing band for Empire of the Sun when Luke Steele takes his production on the road. They've also just been touring with our fave adopted daughter Ladyhawke, and already the reviews have been glowing.   I caught up with Tony and asked him a few questions about The Swiss:   Describe your music   Precise dancefloor arrangements of the "d" word kind   How, when and where did your band form?   Ten years ago in high school from a flaccid jazz ensemble called Mi5 when the other four members got sick of our partying and left.   What's the background to the Next Crop featured track? Who or what inspired it?   It developed over many years like an overweight teenager blossoming into a glamorous adulthood   What are your grand plans for 2010? Records, tours, collaborations?   All of the above. Generally just cutting sick 24sevz. We've got an EP out in January then a full length with some sweet collabs later on.   Name five Australian records everyone should have in their collection and why?   Cut Copy - Bright Like Neon Love: It was this or the Avalanches   INXS - Kick: When Australia ruled the world   Flowers - Icehouse: cos it's sexy   Midnight Juggernauts - Dystopia: cos Daft Punk put them in their top friends   AC/DC - Back in Black: So everyone knows I`m hetero   'Bubble Bath' is the first taste of the band's debut EP, which was produced by Donny Sloan, who also worked on the Empire of the Sun record. You can download my interview with Tony and Luke from The Swiss here and hear their thoughts on disco revival and playing with Luke Steele.
