简介

Words and Music is a collection of songs written by Jeannie Tanner and recorded by twelve of Chicago’s finest vocalists. This two-disc album features: Alyssa Allgood, Rose Colella, Elaine Dame, Kimberly Gordon, Paul Marinaro, Tammy McCann, Jeff Meegan, Typhanie Monique, Andy Pratt, Abigail Riccards, Michele Thomas and Amy Yassinger. Tanner’s mastery as a composer lies in her ability to fuse the spontaneity of old school jazz with memorable lyrics and musical hooks that will have her listeners humming her songs the first time through this album. Stylistically, the tunes on “Words & Music” embrace the spectrum of musical genres from the Great American Songbook to Red Light New Orleans-style Jazz; bossa nova and retro 1960s Rat Pack Swing to percussive funk; rousing gospel and soulful ballads; to shades of adult contemporary pop. Like this eclectic mix of music, the featured vocalists bring their depth of versatility and musicianship to interpreting and capturing these songs in their own unique styles. “Words & Music” is Tanner’s ninth album, but her first songbook collection. “All of my previous albums featured me as the vocalist. As a composer, it has always been my dream to have other singers record my songs,” says Tanner. More than two years in development, some of the artists are singing new songs that Tanner wrote specifically for their voices, just for this project. They are also singing material from her expansive catalogue, with fresh new arrangements. Tanner continues, “There are so many gifted singers in Chicago, but these vocalists were chosen for this album because their voices lend the right textures and timbres for the songs that I wanted to record.” “Words & Music” was a total collaboration with the singers, as they helped work out their own arrangements with Tanner, and her co-producer and music director/arranger Dan Murphy. The album was recorded by Matt Feddermann, who also helped produce the tracks. Dan Murphy played piano, Hammond B3 and Rhodes on the album with Cory Biggerstaff (bass), Darren Scorza (drums), Neal Alger (guitar), Chris Madsen (saxophone), Adam Thornburg (trombone), the HAWK String Quartet, led by Katherine Hughes, and Tanner, who played trumpet on a few of the tracks. “My compositions are only notes on a staff and words on a page,” says Tanner. “It is truly each performer’s heart, soul and talent that bring my work to life. I wanted these performers to make my songs their own - and they did!” Jeannie Tanner is an award winning composer, vocalist and trumpeter who performs and records with her band, the Jeannie Tanner Quartet. Tanner’s publishing is represented by Heavy Hitters Music, Los Angeles, CA and her original music has been placed in television, film and can be heard on local, national and international radio, including her own Pandora Radio Station. She is a full-time musician, who performs regularly at venues throughout Chicago. For more information, visit www.jeannietanner.com
