简介
Los Angeles band THE MARCHES is the creation of Richard Conti. The Chicago ex-patriot studied classical piano growing up and earned a classical performance degree at a private university in Chicago . THE MARCHES were formed as a way to include all influences excluded by his teachers and cross musical borders with abandon. In turn, the group becomes something utterly unique and consequently, the only one of its kind. Songs fuse all genres together: blues harmony vocals with ghetto beats with classical piano; Motown rhythm sections with Indie vocals; Latin section with a vocoder; Horns over hip-hop. THE MARCHES have taken the fat of the American heart and fried it into the meat of American music. 4 a.m. Is the New Midnight was recorded completely in the homes of family and friends. It was so hard to make that way, as opposed to a studio, that everything had to be recorded in an innovative and clever way. And that’s part of what gives this album its unique sound. Many people think the horn sections and piano were sampled. They were in fact all recorded live but recorded in such a way as to sound like samples. The lyrics also add another element to the album. With sarcastic undercurrents the song title choruses profess “Sometimes Sex Isn’t About the Money” and “4 a.m. Is the New Midnight.” In the song Bad Touch, the lyric “Like a bad touch from a stranger/ you can’t help but make things awkward” and in the title track lyric “You got a mind/ But I don’t mind” all represent somewhat dark and playful games with the lines. The best part of the album is that the songs cut out all the fat; it takes the heart and left-of-centers of every genre’s best and warps it into its own.
