简介

This and the other double album 'Brancusi' are in a league of their own. Their material is something both very old and new, being inspired by ancient Romanian carols and put in an Electronica Ambient context. The title 'Sol Invictus' (Undefeated Sun) is a reference to the ancient, major celebration of the Winter Solstice, an essential one in many traditional cultures, including the Romanian authentic tradition. Yet there are no wild Saturnalia here: a sense of solemn rite, mystery, spaciousness and contemplative awe characterizes many tracks in this album, although there are several more rhythmic ones, too. The tracks in the first disc are based on the following ancient Romanian carols: 'Iata vin colindatori/Here come the carolers' (tracks 1 and 9), 'Voi ziori de ziua/O ye dawn' (tracks 2, 4, 6, and 8), 'Tot jupanu gazda/The master husband' (track 7), and 'Ia iesi-mi, iesi-mi/Come out, come out' (tracks 3 and 5). The second disc (tracks 10-18) is actually an extended cycle of subtle variations on the famous carol 'Iata vin colindatori'/'Here come the carolers', which appears clearly only in the last track. Many tracks were inspired also by Romanian mythology: Kogaion (track 2) is the most sacred mountain of the Dacians, Saint Sunday (track 13) helped the hero in his quest in fairytales, and the Air Trials (track 14) were meant for the judgment of the soul in the after-world. Track 5 was included in the soundtrack of the film 'On Blind Faith' by Gabriela Vanga.
